Indexing newspapers from microfilm is a very tedious and painstaking process. The editor of this volume has listed the page references to the Shelby County Independent newspaper first, then the names of the individuals in the next column in alphabetical order.

Newspapers are a source of information that many beginning genealogists overlook in their haste to discover names, dates and places, not understanding that sometimes newspapers are the only remaining source of the information they seek. The experienced genealogist will spend some time in the local newspapers of the target time period whenever the opportunity arises. This volume will make the work of seeking information in Shelby County newspapers between the years of 174 and 1876 just a little easier. The author has even added a note to the listing whenever an entry involved a tax list. This volume covers the Shelby County Independent from the first edition to just before the name was changed, by Dr. E. E. Waggoner, to the Shelby County Democrat.
