A River Does Run Through It
The original off-the-beaten path book about Lake Shelbyville.
Early pioneers followed the Kaskaskia River up from the Mississippi to settle alongside the Kickapoo Indians who originally lived in the area.
In 1970 a section of the Kaskaskia was dammed to create the 11,200 acre Lake Shelbyville, spawning numerous recreation areas. |
Whether pitching a tent in a hike-in campground or snuggling under an Amish quilt in an elegant resort or relaxing at a bed-and-breakfast by night, visitors to the lake area spend the day hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, picnicking, windsurfing or golfing. Interpretive events and festivals occur throughout the year, including the annual Festival of Lights each Christmas, extending for miles around the lake via the Snowflake Trail, including the Snowflake cross-country/hiking trail. This year-round recreation area features state, federal and private recreation facilities and services.
